Supplying an integrated drive package to suit the existing MOFFETT chassis
Client Overview:
MOFFETT is a truck-mounted forklift brand owned by Hiab, which is a pioneer in smart and sustainable on road load handling solutions.
MOFFETT has a focus on developing innovative equipment to enable the safe and efficient loading and unloading of goods.
Founded in 1945 by Cecil Moffett, the company quickly established itself as a manufacturer of specialty equipment and in 1986, Cecil revolutionised the transport industry with the invention of the truck mounted forklift. The company has continued to innovate and in 2013 it launched its eSeries – the world's first lithium-ion powered truck mounted forklifts.

Challenges and Project Scope:
In 2017, MOFFETT planned to design a new generation of e-trucks that would meet increasing demands for sustainable, efficient and flexible urban and night-time delivery solutions, that offered quieter operations. Therefore, looking at ways to improve vehicle manoeuvrability through the drive solution, whilst further reducing noise emissions.
To enable a smoother transition and enable retrofitting, MOFFETT wanted to keep the new design to a similar size as its engine driven truck. Therefore, a challenge was to create a compact solution that would fit into the existing chassis.

Solution:
Working with the MOFFETT engineering team Lancereal was able to apply its expertise in supporting the electrification of equipment and experience of supplying integrated drive packages to create a suitable solution.
This included a compact permanent magnet motor, planetary gear box, hydraulic park brake (which later became an electric brake) and a chassis mounting plate designed to suit the existing MOFFETT chassis.

Outcomes:
In 2020, the MOFFETT second generation of all-electric truck mounted forklifts were launched.
Incorporating all-wheel drive and electric wheel motors on all wheels, not only increased the safety and flexibility of the equipment but reduced the use of hydraulic hoses by 60 per cent – which has led to less service requirements and a lower risk of failures.
The truck mounted forklift is also equipped with the latest lithium-ion battery technology meaning it does not generate or release any emissions. It also has a near-silent operation, which benefits urban deliveries especially on early morning or late-night deliveries. The driver also benefits from no vibration and a safer working environment as they are able to hear more clearly.
Jann Hansen, Director Sales, Truck Mounted Forklifts, commented: “MOFFETT was the first mover of converting diesel truck mounted forklifts to electric and this development has continued over the years. As we believe the future of the truck mounted forklift industry will definitely be electric. More so as the components get better than they are today, moving towards lower cost with better performance.
“Working with Lancereal we were able to find a solution that addressed requirements for a safe, efficient and silent operation solution – whilst fitting into existing chassis designs to further support sustainable product development. It was helpful for our team to work with Lancereal as we can each draw upon our strengths and apply together our specialist skills.”
