Meet Emma Kit, Design & Applications Engineer at Lancereal

As part of International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), we wanted to shine a spotlight on Emma Kit!

Starting her journey in engineering in 2013 as a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice, Emma joined the Lancereal team in 2020.

Why did you choose to work in engineering?

I’ve always had a love for design and being creative. I took A levels in Art, Photography and IT as I initially considered a career in graphic design. Then someone in engineering asked me: “What about engineering as a career? It isn’t only about engines despite the word suggesting so.” That got me thinking. So, I did some research into the sector and found that I could combine my creative side with IT to design all kinds of things using CAD software – it was and still is perfect for me.

What opportunities does working at Lancereal offer you?

There is always the opportunity to learn something new, from the enquiries we receive which could require a bespoke solution to designated training.

I would also say that my colleagues, from the shop floor to the directors, will always help you to develop. Everyone is encouraged to embrace learning and improve their knowledge and skills through training days, events and webinars that are relevant to their role. In turn, we ready ourselves to adapt to new project enquiries by expanding product and software knowledge.

What do you like most about your role?

As a Design and Applications Engineer, I’m involved throughout the whole journey – from the enquiries that come in and making suitable solution suggestions to creating designs, producing the Bills of Materials and investigating how best to produce a solution. I love getting involved with the production team on first off builds all the way down to efficient and effective packaging.

The theme for Women in Engineering Day is “Together We Engineer”. What would you say to women looking to get into engineering?

Go for it! There are so many avenues in engineering that can be explored. If you’re arty, good with your hands, excellent at organisation or just a keen learner, there is always a place for you in such a big industry.

I felt welcomed into the industry which, back in 2013 when I first started my apprenticeship, was more male dominated than it is today. It’s an industry which keeps growing and evolving; engineering knows no bounds.
